Smithsonian Beetles

Smithsonian Beetles

These illustrations were created during my 5 week internship at the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History. They are part of an ongoing project of beetle illustrations in the Entomology Department.LACarter_Smithsonian_BeetlesA microscope was used to see these minuscule flea beetles, and a camera lucida microscope attachment helped to get the forms of the twisted specimens. Combining traditional and digital techniques, my intern host taught me this method of illustrating museum specimens for publication.
